Hello! This is Austin, the founder of Bridge Town Interiors. Today, I want to chat with you about something that's not just a design principle, but a part of who I am—Modern Feng Shui Interior. Growing up in Hong Kong, Feng Shui wasn't just a concept; it was woven into everyday life. It was like an unspoken guide to creating spaces that feel right. But it wasn’t until a trip to Australia in 2012 that I truly realised its broader impact.

Back in Summer 2012, I was in my favourite café in Perth, enjoying a moment of quiet, when I picked up an interior design magazine - Western Australia Home Design + Living. As I flipped to the back, I came across this principal(Sorry I forgot her name but let me know if anyone can find out for me) who said, "Feng Shui is about design a space that the household(s) and the space feel like one." That line hit me hard. I realised that Feng Shui's influence wasn’t just a cultural thing—it had found its way into Western homes too, in subtle but powerful ways. That moment was a turning point, and it shaped how I approach interior design today.
The Basics of Feng Shui
So, what exactly is Feng Shui? At its core, it’s an ancient Chinese practice aimed at harmonising people with their environment. It’s about the flow of energy—or "Chi"—and how our surroundings can influence our well-being, relationships, and even our fortunes. When you arrange your home with these principles in mind, you create a space that feels balanced and inviting.
Key Feng Shui Principles
Let’s break down some key principles in a way that’s easy to apply:

Decluttering Clutter is like a roadblock for Chi. Ever walked into a messy room and felt instantly stressed? That’s blocked energy. Clear out what you don’t need, and you’ll feel a difference almost immediately. Clutter would simulate our nervous system and stress our body. For me, a home it's about to me or my clients to relax and doesn't make us even more stress after a victory battle at work.

Wood: Growth and vitality. Bring in plants or wooden furniture.
Fire: Passion and energy. Think candles or warm lighting.
Earth: Stability. Use earthy tones or ceramics.
Metal: Clarity. Incorporate metal accents or white hues.
Water: Serenity. Add mirrors or water features.
When these elements are in harmony, your space feels just right. We should always place the right material furniture in the correct area in order to promote the abundance of life.

Optimising Furniture Placement The way you place furniture can make or break the energy flow. For instance, your bed should have a solid headboard and be positioned diagonally from the door, but not directly in line with it. This setup fosters a sense of security.
We interior designer adore beautiful furniture and put our heart and soul into space planning. By having the layout right can totally enhance and improve our clients lifestyle and daily life. A lot of briliant design has one thing similar - good flow. Good flow of movement for the households to walk around and not bump into anything to hurt themselves. That's good Chi as well.

We all love mirrors. But placing mirror has it's own rules. We would want any negative energy in the space. In Feng Shui theory, mirror should not have direct contact with sun light. I know you may think it can generate more light into the space. Think about it, you don't want harsh light reflection in the space and hurting your eyes. On the other hand, an indirect reflection of light can make your home very warm and pleasing.
Feng Shui is all about ''Chi''. Chi is air. In UK winter(I live in Manchester), we have unbelievably bad weather. As you all know it's cold and wet all the time, I would totally suggest to have air purifier, the best case scenario, crack your window open a bit, leave a crack and let the air in. If we have a good weather, not raining. Let the windows open for an hour to let the stagnant air ''Chi'' go out and welcome the fresh air in.
Speaking of opening windows and doors to let the Chi flow, I would recommend to close the bathroom door the whole time. It has a lot of water element but at the same time, the drain can flush the wealth down in the toilet according to Feng Shui principal.
Interior Layout and Décor
Let’s talk about specific rooms:
Entryway: This is where energy enters your home. Keep it tidy and welcoming. A mirror can expand the space, but don’t place it directly facing the door.
Living Room: Arrange seating to encourage conversation and ensure there’s a clear path through the room. Soft furnishings in balanced colours can tie the space together.
Bedroom: Aim for a calming vibe. Use soothing colours and minimal clutter. Place your bed where you can see the door but aren’t directly in its path.
Kitchen: The heart of the home. Keep it bright and organised. Balance the Fire (stove) and Water (sink) elements to avoid conflict.
Bathroom: These can drain energy, so keep the door closed and use earth tones to ground the space.
Home Office: Position your desk to face the door, symbolising control and readiness for opportunity. Keep it clutter-free and add personal touches that inspire you.
